Demokratie-X

Last modified Nov 28, 2024
A project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Introduction

Demokratie-X is a research project aimed at developing a privacy-respecting, fair, and public welfare-oriented platform for news. The project is a response to the current digital news market domination by a few large platforms owned by global technology corporations, which raises concerns about media power concentration and its potential impact on democratic opinion-forming processes. By leveraging decentralized technologies, Demokratie-X seeks to create a more balanced and transparent news ecosystem that prioritizes user privacy and public interest over profit maximization.

Goal

The primary goal of Demokratie-X is to create a new decentralized and independent non-profit news platform. This platform aims to secure European values, privacy, and self-determination while providing an alternative to dominant news platforms. By developing a sustainable, non-profit business model and implementing privacy-by-design principles, the project seeks to demonstrate that it's possible to build a news platform that serves the public interest while fostering a healthy democratic discourse.

Research Focus & Work

The project follows an interdisciplinary approach, combining expertise from economics, computer science, sociology, and law. The main focus areas include:

  • Developing a decentralized and independent platform architecture
  • Ensuring privacy protection and data sovereignty
  • Creating fair and public welfare-oriented business models
  • Providing design and action recommendations for implementation
