The hybridWiki provides a lightweight semantic extension usable in a traditional wiki environment. In contrast to more heavyweight approaches as semantic wikis, the hybridWiki does not focus on annotating wiki content with semantic information corresponding to a fixed ontology, which could be regarded as a top-down (i.e. ontology first) approach. The hybridWiki approach allows a kind of ontology to emerge from the content, especially from structured parts thereof, e.g. tables or lists. By this, the hybridWiki is able to foster bottom-up ontology engineering utilizing web 2.0 technologies especially in the user interface.

The hybridWiki is an extension to the wiki-platform tricia. It is purely java and utilizes a metamodelling facility for providing access to the structured content, namely the eclipse modeling framework (EMF). Dynamic web technologies as AJAX are used to provide the user with recommendations for structuring principles and terms, which have been used by other users. Thereby, collaborative ontology building and engineering is supported. Complementing the lightweight creation and maintenance methods of the wiki in connection with the structuring principles, the hybridWiki approach provides facilities for querying and visualizing the structured information in a convenient form to further facilitate information re-use in a collaborative knowledge management environment.
