Web collaboration and communication applications like wikis and blogs have received a lot of attention in recent years since they are believed to have great potential to change and improve the way people communicate and work over the internet. They have proven to be particularly useful in knowledge management applications ranging from open web platforms to smaller platforms for internal use in enterprises. While many enterprises are still at the beginning of the process of introducing these new technologies in the working environment, they are already faced with the next generation of collaboration tools enabled by recent advances in web- and particularly browser-technology. To keep pace with the rapid change in communication paradigms which goes along with this development, it is indispensable to maintain a good understanding of the different classes of tools that are available now, as well as their possible application contexts. Furthermore this understanding is essential as a starting point for an examination of the distinct features of new tools and concepts currently emerging in the field of web applications.
Multiple students can work on the same topic independently, i.e. at different industry partners. Every student compiles a report on the results of his/her guided research, which must be "submitted" to an internal workshop and is reviewed by assistants of the chair. Additionally, every student must give a short talk on his/her results at the end of the semester at an internal workshop.
Students providing outstanding work are encouraged to submit their results to a scientific conference, workshop, or journal. For doing so, they are provided guidance by the organizers of the guided research after the internal workshop and presentation.
